National Museum of African American Music Opens with Environments by Available LightThe newly constructed National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM) the 56,000 sq. ft. museum promises to Educate, Preserve and Celebrate. Situated in the heart of Music City, NMAAM boasts many of the world's greatest songwriters, producers, and performers of all time as the only museum in the nation with a dedicated focus on the impact of African American Music. The museum's interactive galleries play along with the American soundtrack throughout history, highlight Nashville's significant influence, and demonstrate how African American music has provided inspiration to others around the world. The goal of this exhibit design was to engage visitors in the emotional experience inhabited by the rich history of African American music. By providing context for the origins of different genres of music, the museum invites visitors to a deeper and more enduring emotional experience that lasts well beyond their visit. Available Light was tasked with creating environments that were as varied as the music, as lush as the harmonies, as inspirational as Gospel and shocking as Hip-hop. This was accomplished primarily by a very wide, yet strictly controlled color palette. Each gallery had a specific palette that echoed a deliberate graphic treatment tied to the theme of the gallery. This created an immersive, enveloping environment that powerfully drives home the unvarnished history of the genesis of the Blues, Gospel, Hip-Hop, and others. Available Light says they are delighted to have served their longterm client, Gallagher & Associates .
