Boston Pops Holiday Season features Lighting from 4Wall NY In December, 4Wall New York provided lighting equipment to the Boston Pops. Over a period of 19 days in December, the historic symphony orchestra fit in 39 concerts, presenting a huge challenge for Pamela Smith, the Pops' lighting designer, and her crew. An additional challenge for this incarnation of "Holiday Pops" was incorporating more LEDs to lower power consumption and to create a quieter lighting system. Smith turned to Chroma-Q ColorForce LED battens and Philips Vari*Lite moving lights to accomplish this goal. Specifically, Smith chose four Vari*Lite VL3000Q Spots for gobo washes above the orchestra while 12 VL1000 units lit the conductors podium, organ pipes, chorus, and orchestra. Smith spoke of the change, saying, "This is the first season that the Boston Pops used LEDs to light the orchestra and for ambient hall lighting. There was a 27% drop in possible power usage between Holiday Pops 2009 and this season." In addition to Smith serving as lighting designer, other crew included Russ Costa as technical director, Rob Smith as crew chief and video producer, and Mark Rawson as lighting technician.
