Western Park Arena in Utah Upgrades with Fulcrum Acoustic System

Western Park Arena with its new sound system from Fulcrum Acoustic.

Uintah County's Western Park Arena, a versatile event facility in Vernal, Utah, recently upgraded its sound system to provide superior audio coverage and clarity for its diverse range of events. The system was designed and installed by Atkinson Sound, leveraging the advanced capabilities of Fulcrum Acoustic loudspeakers.

The 3,000 seat indoor arena, known for hosting rodeos, archery competitions, fairs, and movie screenings, faced significant challenges with its previous sound system. "The old system lacked intelligibility," explained Hoyt Atkinson of Atkinson Sound. "They actually quit using it a few years ago and were always bringing in outside systems for different events." To address these issues, Atkinson Sound recommended a permanent solution that would not only reduce costs but also ensure a consistent, high-quality audio experience for all events.

The new audio system features a combination of Fulcrum Acoustic products designed for optimal coverage and performance in the arena's acoustically reflective environment. Twelve GX1200 coaxial loudspeakers, ceiling-mounted for down-firing applications, deliver even coverage across the arena floor. Their symmetrical 100° x 100° coverage pattern attenuates the level immediately below the speakers for more even coverage.

The tiered seating area is covered by five CCX1526 passive cardioid loudspeakers. Additionally, two CS218L passive cardioid subwoofers are flown over the center of the arena to augment low-end frequencies, ensuring a full-range audio experience. The cardioid design of both the CCX1526 and CS218L loudspeakers was specifically chosen to manage the reflective nature of the space, minimizing low-end energy that can cause late reflections. The resulting system provides even coverage and excellent intelligibility, the company says. The system is powered by four APEX CP1504 amplifiers that are remotely managed via APEX's IntelliCloud WebUI, allowing for easy adjustments anywhere in the venue.

The upgrade has been met with enthusiastic approval from the arena's management. "Their comment was that it is 100 times better than the system they had previously," Atkinson reported. "The sound is incredible. Now they have a system that they can plug and play, and they're loving it." With the new Fulcrum Acoustic system, Western Park Arena is now equipped to provide exceptional sound quality for all its events, enhancing the experience for performers and audiences alike.
