Here Lies Love Wins Big for Designs at Drama Desk Awards

Christopher Durang's Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, Matilda The Musical, and revivals of Pippin and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? were among the winners of the 58th Annual Drama Desk Awards presented May 19 at The Town Hall.

Rob Howell won the Outstanding Set Design Award for his work on Matilda against Mimi Lien, The Whale, Santo Loquasto, The Assembled Parties, Anna Louizos, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Michael Yeargan, Golden Boy, and David Zinn, The Flick.

The Outstanding Costume Design Award went to William Ivey Long for Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella, which competed against Amy Clark and Martin Pakledinaz for Chaplin: The Musical, Dominique Lemieux, Pippin, Chris March, Chris March's The Butt-Cracker Suite! A Trailer Park Ballet, Loren Shaw, Restoration Comedy, and Paloma Young, Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812.

Justin Townsend won the Outstanding Lighting Design Award for Here Lies Love. The nominees were Jane Cox, Passion, Kenneth Posner, Pippin, Ken Billington, Chaplin: The Musical, Daniel Winters, The Man Who Laughs, and Scott Zielinski, A Civil War Christmas.

The Outstanding Projection Design Award went to Peter Nigrini for Here Lies Love, The nominees were Wendall K. Harrington, Old Hats, Jon Driscoll, Chaplin: The Musical , Darrel Maloney, Checkers, Pedro Pires, Cirque du Soleil: Totem, and Aaron Rhyne, Wild With Happy.

The Outstanding Sound Design in a Musical Award was a three-way tie between Steve Canyon Kennedy for Hands on a Hardbody, Scott Lehrer and Drew Levy for Chaplin: The Musical, and Tony Meola for The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Other nominees were Brian Ronan, Bring It On: The Musical, Brian Ronan, Giant, and Dan Moses Schreier, Passion.

Mel Mercier won The Outstanding Sound Design in a Play Award for The Testament of Mary. The nominees were Steve Fontaine, Last Man Club, Christian Frederickson, Through the Yellow Hour, Lindsay Jones, Wild With Happy, Ien DeNio, The Pilo Family Circus, and Fergus O'Hare, Macbeth.

Special Awards were presented to The New York Musical Theatre Festival's Isaac Robert Hurwitz, executive director and producer; Wakka Wakka's Gabrielle Brechner, Kirjan Waage, and Gwendolyn Warnock; actress Jayne Houdyshell; and The Whale playwright Samuel D. Hunter.
