The Father, Frozen Lead in Design Categories at LADCC Awards

The Pasadena Playhouse production of Florian Zeller's drama The Father and the national tour of the Broadway musical Frozen (seen at Hollywood Pantages Theatre) were the big winners in the design categories at the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards, which were announced yesterday. This year's awards covered productions from 2021 and 2021.

In the set design category, David Meyer won for The Father, as did Frederica Nascimento for Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' satire An Octoroon, at The Fountain Theatre.

Natasha Katz took the lighting design award for her work on Frozen. Other winners were Elizabeth Harper for The Father and Azra King-Abadi for Poor Clare, about the Roman Catholic Saint Clare of Assisi. (The latter play tied with The Father for best production.)

Christopher Oram won in the costume design category for his work on Frozen. Also winning were Halei Parker, for Lizastrata, a version of Aristophanes' classic comedy featuring Liza Minnelli song hits, at The Echo Theater Company, and Catherine Zuber, for the national tour of My Fair Lady, as revived by New York's Lincoln Center Theater.

The sole winner in the sound design category was John Zalewski for The Father. There were two winning designs in the CGI/video category: Kaitlyn Pietras and Jason H. Thompson for Revenge Song, a swashbuckling queer historical romance at Geffen Playhouse, and Finn Ross, for Frozen.

The LADCC also recognizes design for streaming presentations. This year, there were two winning offerings. Corwin Evans and Bree Pavey won for UnRavelled, about the connection between the contemporary scientist Anne Adams and the French composer Maurice Ravel, presented by the Global Brain Health Institute, based at University of California, San Francisco, and Trinity College Dublin. Also winning was Andrew Schmedake for The Ballad of Emmett Till, about the lynching victim, produced by The Fountain Theatre.

Other winners included Lily Bartenstein for the prop design of Lizastrata, Jeremy Chernick for the visual effects of Frozen, and Joe Seely for the puppet design of The ODDyssey, a streaming spoof of the Homeric epic, presented by Troubadour Theater Company.
