Drama Desk Award Winners Announced The winners of the Drama Desk Awards were announced last night at Town Hall in Manhattan. The awards, which cover Broadway, Off Broadway, and Off Off Broadway, are voted on by critics, journalists, and editors who cover the New York theatre. Taking the award for Outstanding Set Design in a Play was Matt Saunders, who created an elaborate modernist Los Angeles mansion, complete with swimming pool, for "Daddy," produced by The New Group. Winning in the category of Outstanding Set Design in a Musical was David Korins, who came up with various vertiginous views of the afterlife and a constantly changing Connecticut farmhouse interior in Beetlejuicep>. The award for Outstanding Costume Design in a Play went to Toni-Leslie James, who dressed the characters of the historical comedy Bernhardt/Hamlet in late 19th-century finery. The winner in the category of Outstanding Costumes Design in a Musical was Bob Mackie, recreating some of his greatest hits and charting fashions of several decades in The Cher Show. The award for Outstanding Lighting Design in a Play went to Amith Chandrashaker, for the moon-haunted landscape of Boesman and Lena, produced by Signature Theatre Company. The winter in the category of Outstanding Lighting Design in a Musical was Bradley King, for the protean series of looks that create the world of Hadestown. The award for Outstanding Sound Design in a Play went to Nick Powell, who effectively conjured the howls of banshees in The Ferryman. In the category of Outstanding Sound Design for a musical, the winners were Nevin Steinbergand Jessica Paz, capturing the distinctive blues/jazz score of Hadestown, while preserving the intelligibility of the musical's lyrics. Winning the award for Outstanding Projection Design was Peter England, for the wraparound vistas that create the immersive effect of the Broadway musical King Kong. The award for Outstanding Wig and Hair Design went to Charles G. LaPointe, for the parade of outrageous coiffures that help define p><The Cher Show.
