Epson Sponsors Lighten Up Projection Mapping Project in AlbuquerqueIn the glow of Winter Solstice and the New Year, from January 3 through February 1, Electric Playhouse, The City of Albuquerque, and Epson will sponsor the first annual city-wide projection-mapping event: Lighten Up Albuquerque. As the light returns and as new year hopes, resolutions, and dreams shine, Albuquerque is alive with the energy of the future -- powered by a sustainable ecosystem and economy as well as the playful enthusiasm of city residents and all New Mexicans. This is a time to think big, share light, and set a tone. In this spirit, every Friday for four weeks and culminating on Saturday, February 1, Electric Playhouse will expertly map and project artwork from a different artist onto a city building, monument, or other location with creations that express the themes of energy, light, community, sustainability, and play. The event launches at the historic Pueblo Deco landmark Kimo Theater on Central Avenue: * Friday, January 3 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm Kimo Theater Artist: Bill Pritchard * Friday, January 10 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm Location TBA Artist: Katy Parsons * Friday, January 10 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm Location TBA Artist: Britney King * Friday, January 17 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm Location TBA Artist: Plant Dat * Friday, January 24 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm Location TBA Artist: Brian Carlson * Saturday, February 1 from 5:30pm to midnight Electric Playhouse: Morgan Barnard and Team Electric Playhouse The City of Albuquerque has graciously provided permitting for city-owned locations along with additional assistance to the project, while Epson has generously provided equipment that includes four large-venue, high-lumen projectors with different lens options to accommodate various locations. Epson is also providing key technical advice and support to produce the best results for the city. Electric Playhouse has grown through the city's One Albuquerque Engage program in downtown Albuquerque to a new 24,000 sq.ft. location in just 15 months, with support from the city and the greater community. "Even as we finish building an enormous all-ages playhouse on Albuquerque's west side, we continue to pursue a variety of ambitious creative visions," says Electric Playhouse CEO John-Mark Collins. "We have projections at the new 'Seeing Beyond' exhibit at The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, the world's largest interactive sandbox at ZeroSpace in Midtown Manhattan, and are working on a mind-reading brain exhibit in Las Vegas -- with more to come. Albuquerque is our home, however, and we're producing our grandest event for the new year in the heart of the Duke City, with much gratitude to the City Of Albuquerque and to Epson for co-sponsoring." "We are excited to work on this project and provide our technology and support for the artists to project their creativity in a larger-than-life experience," says Ramzi Shakra, product manager, large-venue projectors, Epson America, Inc. "Epson's laser projector technology provides convenient installation options along with extraordinary color brightness to deliver true-to-life displays anywhere." Following an RFP issued by Electric Playhouse, artists chose a location from a list or proposed one. They had to sketch, model, or describe visually the vision of the piece and describe specifically how the work maps to the physical location selected. The sponsors required a detailed yet brief proposal of one to two pages, with visual aids highly commended. Concepts had to follow the overall themes of energy, light, community, sustainability, and play and encompass one of these statements in the work: * Lighten up, Albuquerque * Brighten the community * Light the way * Be the light in your community Each winning artist will be awarded $250 to produce the piece as well as tickets to the Electric Playhouse grand opening.
