Kinetic Lighting Provides Lighting for Star Trek Into Darkness DVD Release Party

For the DVD release party celebrating Paramount Home Media Distribution's Star Trek Into Darkness, Kinetic Lighting worked some lighting magic with an assist from the coolest and most apt prop imaginable: the space shuttle Endeavour. The Production Elements-produced party took to the California Science Center, which NASA's former orbiter now calls home.

Kinetic's James Schipper, who designed the event's lighting, opted to bathe most of the shuttle in white light using Martin MAC Auras. Schipper utilized Vari-Lite VL3500 Spots to project patterns and saturated colors around Endeavour and Chauvet Nexus 4X4 panels to wash the orbiter's underbelly. The Kinetic team used Barco DL.3s to project video imagery from the film's closing credits on the ceiling above the shuttle. A MA Lighting GrandMA 2 light console was used to program and control the rig.

"The shuttle is breathtaking on its own, and what better way to showcase that than to keep it under white light," explained Schipper. "That said, I wanted something more nuanced than pure white. We were able to mix a white light from the Auras that achieved just that." The Kinetic team also benefited from the use of moving lights here, given the tight setup schedule.

Outside, Kinetic washed the building facade in red lighting using COLORado 1 Tri Tour LED pars for uplighting and Nexus 4X4s front lighting the walls for fill. Schipper lit the celebrity arrivals on the red carpet with Chroma-Q Studio Force D 12 XT, a high output white-light LED fixture.

"The crisp white light on the red carpet contrasted really nicely with the glowing red facade in front of it," Schipper said. "It was also satisfying to know we accomplished all of that with energy-efficient choices."
