Lucille Lortel Nominees Include The Flick, Murder Ballad, Detroit

Nominations for the 2013 Lucille Lortel Awards, noting excellence in Off-Broadway theatre, were announced April 3. Signature Theatre's The Piano Lesson earned the most nominations, with six, followed by the rock musical Murder Ballad (five), and Annie Baker's play The Flick (four).

Three titles from Playwrights Horizons, including The Whale, Detroit, and the controversial The Flick, are nominated in the category of Outstanding Play.

The awards will be handed out May 5 at NYU Skirball Center beginning at 7pm. Actors Aasif Mandvi and Maura Tierney will host. General-public tickets for the ceremony are $75, and they will be available at 212-352-3101, online at nyuskirball.org, and in person at the Skirball Center's Shagan Box Office at 556 LaGuardia. This year's event will once again benefit The Actors Fund.

The Lifetime Achievement Award will go to Todd Haimes while Neil LaBute will be inducted into the Playwrights' Sidewalk. Theatre Development Fund will be awarded the Outstanding Body of Work Award and the Outstanding Alternative Theatrical Experience award will go to Old Hats, created and performed by Bill Irwin and David Shiner with music by and featuring Nellie McKay.

The nominees for Outstanding Scenic Design include Beowulf Boritt, If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet; Miriam Buether, Cock; Clint Ramos, Wild With Happy; Louisa Thompson, Detroit; and Mark Wendland, Murder Ballad.

The award for Outstanding Costume Design will go to Toni-Leslie James, A Civil War Christmas; Jessica Pabst, The Whale; Clint Ramos, Wild With HappyVanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike; or Anita Yavich, Golden Child.

The Outstanding Lighting Design nominees are Jane Cox, The Flick; Rui Rita, The Piano Lesson; Ben Stanton, Belleville; Ben Stanton, Murder Ballad; and Scott Zielinski, A Civil War Christmas.

The nominees for Outstanding Sound Design are Leah Gelpe, Slowgirl; Bray Poor, The Flick; Shane Rettig, Detroit '67; Jane Shaw, Jackie; and Matt Tierney, Detroit.

The Outstanding Play nominees are Bethany; Cock; Detroit; The Flick; and The Whale.

The award for Outstanding Musical will go to Dogfight; Giant; Murder Ballad; The Other Josh Cohen; or Skippyjon Jones.

The Outstanding Revival nominees are All In The Timing; My Children! My Africa!; Passion; The Piano Lesson; and Talley's Folly.

The Outstanding Solo Show nominees are All the Rage; Jackie; and Title and Deed.

The Outstanding Director nominees are Sam Gold, The Flick; Anne Kauffman, Belleville; Tina Landau, A Civil War Christmas; James Macdonald, Cock; and Ruben Santiago-Hudson, The Piano Lesson.

The Outstanding Choreographer nominees are George De La Peña, A Midsummer Night's Dream; Christopher Gattelli, Dogfight; Kyle Mullins, TRIASSIC PARQ: The Musical; Alex Sanchez, Giant; Doug Varone, Murder Ballad.

The Outstanding Lead Actor nominees are Danny Burstein, Talley's Folly; Brandon J. Dirden, The Piano Lesson; Daniel Everidge, Falling; Shuler Hensley, The Whale; Aasif Mandvi, Disgraced.

The award will for Outstanding Lead Actress will go to Quincy Tyler Bernstine, Neva; America Ferrera, Bethany; Vanessa Redgrave, The Revisionist; Roslyn Ruff, The Piano Lesson; and Sharon Washington, Wild With Happy.

The Outstanding Featured Actor award nominees are David Wilson Barnes, Don't Go Gentle; Chuck Cooper, The Piano Lesson; Zach Grenier, Storefront Church; Jake Gyllenhaal, If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet; and Mark Nelson, My Name Is Asher Lev.

The Outstanding Featured Actress nominees are Eisa Davis, Luck of the Irish; Annie Funke, If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet; Rebecca Naomi Jones, Murder Ballad; Amanda Quaid, Luck of the Irish; Da'Vine Joy Randolph, What Rhymes with America.

Representatives of the Off-Broadway League, Actors' Equity Association, Stage Directors & Choreographers Society, the Lucille Lortel Foundation, in addition to theatre journalists, academics, and other Off-Broadway professionals, serve on the Voting Committee.
