Festival Stage Collapses in Spain, Killing One and Injuring Dozens

In the latest accident to plague the summer concert season, a festival stage collapsed in Spain, killing one and injuring as many as 40.

The event happed at the Medusa Festival, in Cullera, Spain; it typically features EDM, electronic, house, and techno music.

According to the BBC, "Footage shows some festivalgoers running in panic, while others are seen continuing to party at the event...The popular Medusa Festival of electronic music was later suspended. The dead man was in his 20s, local media say. Three of the injured suffered serious traumas."

The website Pitchfork, noting that the collapse was caused by winds exceeding 50mph, adds, "Other infrastructure at the EDM festival was also damaged due to the extreme weather. The festival grounds were promptly evacuated afterwards and organizers have since canceled the rest of the event." Variety reports that DJ Miguel Serna was onstage at the time, adding, "'It was a tense few minutes, I've never experienced anything like it before'," Serna wrote in an Instagram story on the day of the incident (as reported by Reuters). 'The tragedy happened just at the end of my session on the main stage, just below it, which was the most affected (area). It was a few moments of horror, I am still in shock'."

Following the accident, the festival's organizers announced, "It has always been an absolute priority for us to the safety of our attendees at our event. Workers and artists as well. We believe that everyone who knows us knows that it is important to protect you all at each of our events. Therefore, and because that is still our maximum, the organization of Medusa Festival have taken the decision to cancel our festival permanently. The adverse and unexpected weather conditions that were predicted continue to happen throughout the day force us morally and responsibly to end our 2022 edition."

The lineup of headliners at the festival included Afrojack, David Guetta, Timmy Trumpet, Carl Cox, and Juan Magán, among others.
