Marilyn Lowey to Present Exhibition in AspenThe noted lighting designer Marilyn Lowey, now an Aspen, Colorado-based visual artist, will present a solo exhibition there, March 10 - April 7. Greater Than the Sum is an exhibition of tableaus which invite the viewer to experience the play of illusion, abstraction, and the instability of meaning as the works' appearance evolves from moment to moment. Their ethereal nature suggests the transcendent or spiritual, while their ephemerality introduces a temporal element, the unfolding of an experience through time. Aspects of family power dynamics and childhood history, sometimes difficult in nature, occasionally inform Lowey's choice of objects, and so bring to the pieces her own story alongside more universal interpretations. The artist also explores how the metaphysical qualities of light can illuminate aspects of power in politics and religion. As installations, these works imbue the whole of the space with their emotional, experiential content. The lighting designer for rock stage Neil Diamond form 1980 to 2018 and Champions on Ice from 1985 - 2007, Lowey also designed Siegfried and Roy's 1989-90 world tour, a show for Lido de Paris in 1994, three projects for Universal Studios Islands of Adventure, among many other projects. Her TV/video credits include Live and In Person: A Chorus Line Anniversary Party (1983), Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music (1982), and Hello Again, a CBS TV special with Neil Diamond and Steve Wonder for which she was nominated for an Emmy. Her clients have included Harry Connick, Jr.; Michael Feinstein; Whitney Houston, Liza Minnelli, and Bette Midler. The exhibition will be held at The Art Base, 174 Midland Avenue, Basalt, CO 81621. The hours are Tuesday - Saturday, 11am - 5pm.
