Drama Desk Award Winners Announced

Drama Desk Award winners announced

The winners of the Drama Desk Awards were announced June 13, at a prerecorded ceremony seen on the local television channel New York 1. The event, originally scheduled for May 31, had been postponed out of respect for the national state of mourning (and subsequent street protests) triggered by the killing of George Floyd.

Among the design winners, Clint Ramos won in the category of Outstanding Scenic Design for a Play, for the Second Stage Broadway production of the comedy Grand Horizons, which depicted the interior of retirement community home, which, in the course of the play, is damaged by an auto accident. Derek McLane's transformation of the Al Hirschfeld Theatre interior into a fantasy vision of Montmartre, for the musical Moulin Rouge! took the award for Outstanding Scenic Design for a Musical.

Also from Moulin Rouge!, Catherine Zuber was cited in the category of Outstanding Costume Design for a Musical, for a parade of outfits that ranged from scanty chorus girl frocks to elaborate suits and ensembles for the cream of Paris' beau monde. Rachel Townsend and Jessica Jahn won the award for Outstanding Costume Design for Play, having created a wardrobe that tracked the rise and fall of the title character of the Hollywood film spoof The Confessions of Lily Dare.

Heather Gilbert won in the category of Outstanding Lighting Design for Play, having created a distinctively creepy, dreamlike atmosphere for the literary drama The Sound Inside. Justin Townsend won in the musical category for his starkly theatrical, highly colorful work on Moulin Rouge!

In the sound design category, Paul Arditti and Christopher Reid were cited for their delicate, crystalline work on the play The Inheritance, while Peter Hylenski won for his dynamic, yet highly intelligible, contribution to Moulin Rouge!

In other categories, Luke Halls' projection design for West Side Story -- a dominant feature of that controversial production -- was cited, as was Campbell Young Associates' wig and hair for Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, a contribution that tracked, with unfailing accuracy, the characters' travels through several decades.

In addition to multiple winners The Inheritance and Moulin Rouge!, Michael R. Jackson's satiric musical, A Strange Loop, which recently won the Pulitzer Prize, took five awards, for book, music, and lyrics; lead performance (by Larry Owens), and direction (by Stephen Brackett).
