AES Announces Celebrated Music Producer and Engineer Ebonie Smith as Keynote Speaker for AES Show 2024 NY

Acclaimed producer and engineer Ebonie Smith will be the keynote speaker at AES Show 2024 NY, taking place Tuesday, October 8 to Thursday, October 10 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City.

The annual flagship event of the Audio Engineering Society will unite 10,000 professionals, enthusiasts, and exhibitors from around the world. Focusing on audio innovation, the event features leading manufacturers showcasing cutting-edge solutions, engineers demonstrating the latest products, and a diverse array of workshops, panels, demos, and training sessions that cater to both researchers and practitioners, the company says. Serving as the keynote speaker, Smith is currently senior audio engineer and producer at Atlantic Records, having developed a remarkable portfolio including the Broadway cast of Hamilton, Janelle Monae's Dirty Computer, and Cardi B's Invasion of Privacy.

Session topics over the three-day event span audio fundamentals plus cutting-edge research, design, and practices in artificial intelligence, spatial audio, audio for games, immersive audio, archiving, high-resolution audio, loudspeakers, headphones, machine learning, perception, room acoustics, recording, and signal processing, the company says.

Featured Convention sessions include the following:

The Making of Mean Girls: Panelists offer a deep dive into the making of Mean Girls, the 2024 remake of the classic film, featuring members of the audio and music team from Daxxit Sound Studios and Parabolic Studios.

NPR's Tiny Desk: A Look Back and a Look Forward: Neil Tevault, the NPR audio engineer who turned a colleague's request into the iconic Tiny Desk Concerts series, will present early Tiny Desk Concerts to reveal the small recording footprint used before it became a must for artists.

Josh Newell, NPR Music's current technical director, works to keep today's standards at the highest level. He will share some recent concerts to demonstrate how the audio has evolved. Newell will also discuss increasing efficiencies of the recording process and his vision for the sound of the Tiny Desk Concerts moving into the future.

Designing an Immersive Audio Production Studio: An In-Depth Study of Rue Boyer in Paris: Demand for immersive content continues to accelerate as consumers' ability to experience immersive audio becomes easier and more cost-effective. This presentation will highlight the acoustical and architectural requirements and challenges as well as the relevant standards to adhere to.

Also featured will be a case study on Paris's newest studio Rue Boyer, including the design strategies and the advanced predictive acoustic analysis involved in creating the studio's design led by architectural acoustic design firm WSDG. Rue Boyer is the flagship location and ultimate teaching studio for Mix with the Masters, global leaders in music production education.

Adventures in Live Streaming: During COVID, streaming was the only way for musicians and artists to connect. As the pandemic subsided, many organizations continued to stream and livestream, often leaving the task of producing video to the audio engineering team. This panel of experienced engineers and educators will share the special challenges they faced producing live concert video and how fellow engineers can also learn this new skill set.

Navigating the Legal Landscape of AI in Music and Tech: This session will explore the legal challenges and implications of AI in music and music tech, providing insights generated by this rapid change in the industry from experts, legal professionals, and technologists. Topics will include intellectual property rights, data privacy, the regulatory landscape, and navigating the complex field.

Sonic Mastery - A Room of One's Own: This panel brings together a group of audio engineers to explore their experiences of navigating and shaping the audio industry as Black women. As they delve into the creation and significance of safe spaces, the panelists will discuss the importance of community in a field where representation is often lacking. Through sharing stories of unique and impactful projects, the conversation will highlight the creativity and resilience required to thrive in a male-dominated industry. Additionally, we will celebrate the legacy of unsung women producers and their groundbreaking contributions to music and production. This session is a discussion by and tribute to the talent and influence of Black women in audio engineering, both past and present.

Analog to Atmos: Bob Marley: This panel reveals the process where legendary artist Bob Marley's classics were remixed into Dolby Atmos for a new generation of listeners. Key Bob Marley albums Burnin', Catch A Fire, Exodus, and Kaya were stereo mixed by Eliot Kissileff in 2022-23 and then given to Nick Rives for the Atmos mix. These mixes were approved by Ziggy Marley, Harry Weinger for the Marley estate, and Universal Music Group (UMG). Many of these songs ended up in the recent film, Bob Marley: One Love, for which Rives also completed the Atmos mix.

They Might Be Giants - AES Masters Talk Audio History: Jim Anderson, past president of the AES Society, presents a look back to some of the greats of music recording such as Phil Ramone, Les Paul, Bob Ludwig, Ray Dolby, and others. Using the AES Oral Historical Videos that he also edited, Anderson will share the unknown or forgotten stories of how modern recording techniques and facilities developed as told by the people who were there using them.

The Technical Legacy of Dr. Robert Moog: This year marks the 60th anniversary of the debut of the Moog modular synthesizer as well as Dr. Robert Moog's AES paper "Voltage-Controlled Electronic Music Modules." This along with a subsequent paper, "A Voltage-Controlled Low-Pass High-Pass Filter for Audio Signal Processing," formed the basis for generations of electronic instruments that followed.

Throughout his career, Moog worked closely with artists to solve technical challenges that led to musically satisfying instruments. This session will reflect on the development of these designs as well as their impact on the industry from some of those who worked with Moog as well as designers who have built on this technical foundation.
