Clay Paky Lights the 2013 Mountbatten Festival of MusicThe Royal Albert Hall played host to the 2013 Mountbatten Festival of Music and what a success it was! The three nights featured Massed Bands of Her Majesty's Royal Marines and captured wonderfully the versatility of some of the world's finest military musicians. Music is taken from some of the big screen movies and there are some sensational solos, making sure that there is something for everyone. The festival also included the unmistakable traditional marches and overtures, meaning that there was perhaps no better building to hold the festival than at one with the grandeur of the iconic hall. Since Queen Victoria opened the venue in 1871 it has been home to some fantastic shows (while in the UK) such as the 100th Royal Variety Performance, and 25th anniversary Phantom of the Opera, and the Skyfall premiere, as well as a vast and diverse list of names of acts and artists who have passed through their doors. To mark the occasion and as a treat for the musicians and the audience, the marines were given "West End" treatment with special lighting. The Royal Albert Hall's Richard Thomas designed the stunning lighting rig which was supplied by a number of lighting companies, including Richard Martin Lighting (RML) who provided 24 Clay Paky Sharpys of which Thomas said "they made the show!" The Clay Paky Sharpy is a 189W moving beam light with a brightness usually achievable only with far greater wattages. Sharpy produces a parallel, laser-like beam with an incredible output. The strong lines and dynamic looks complimented the drama of the music beautifully and lit up what is a truly magical building. All proceeds of the festival go to the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund and CLIC Sergeant. See Clay Paky at PLASA Focus: Austin, September 10-11.
