MEPTIK Powers Audio-Visual Experience Design for Super Bowl LIII Party

DIRECTV Super Saturday Night Super Bowl LIII Party

MEPTIK, an Atlanta, Georgia-based experience design agency specializing in custom designs for live environments, leveraged the commercial AV industry's most powerful content creation and media playback technologies to deliver a dynamic, real-time audio-visual experience to attendees of DIRECTV Super Saturday Night. The Super Bowl LIII Party was held at a temporary, 72,000-sq.-ft. venue in Atlanta -- the host of Super Bowl LIII -- on the evening of Saturday, February 2.

A quickly growing creative force, MEPTIK aggressively adopts innovative technologies to power audio-visual creativity for temporary and permanent installations. This includes projection mapping, VR/AR, and interactive installations.

Powered by multiple disguise media servers, MEPTIK produced and facilitated the display of real-time, audio-reactive visuals created in Notch at the three-floor venue. The pinnacle surfaces of the venue were two large projection-mapped cubes on either side of the main entrance, which were also mapped by MEPTIK. All projection was powered through Barco HDF-W30 systems.

MEPTIK also facilitated the display of content on over 60 TVs throughout the venues, on six unique projection screens that hung above each VIP bar on all three levels, and on three large "pyramid" LED sculptures that hung from the interior substructure. Visuals were rendered in real-time and were directly affected by the songs being played: the more upbeat the song, the more the visuals would react. Music for the event was soundtracked from multiple sources, including live performances from headliner Foo Fighters and the Atlanta-based hip-hop duo Run The Jewels.

MEPTIK's creative approach was strategized under the direction of Defacto Entertainment, which celebrated its ninth year working in partnership with Murphy Productions and JEM Entertainment to produce the live event experience at DIRECTV Super Saturday Night.

"The goal each year is to create an experience that is unique and unparalleled for the client and stakeholders that this event attracts," said Adam Poel, partner and director of production for Defacto Entertainment. "Our team, in conjunction with MEPTIK, worked directly with the creative services team from DIRECTV to create a number of audio-reactive, real-time visuals based on Notch. These visuals, in concert with in-venue activations, DJ sets, IMAG concert coverage, and live performances, culminated in a spectacle for one remarkable evening for this purpose-built, single-event venue."

MEPTIK co-founder Nick Rivero notes that Notch and disguise effortlessly integrate into a single, powerful solution that makes it ideal for very high-end experience design projects with interactive elements. Leveraging both toolsets together, MEPTIK can develop dynamic audio-reactive and interactive visuals for live events with virtually no limitation -- all from one hardware box in a single rack. That made it a perfect solution to supply the audio-reactive visuals that Defacto Entertainment had requested for this year's DIRECTV Super Saturday Night event.

"Notch is a content creation tool for interactive digital imagery, and it was the first software solution of its kind to directly integrate into disguise media playback engines," said Rivero. "This creates an incredibly efficient workflow for our team. In Notch, we created the visuals and exported them directly to disguise. And, disguise then reliably routed and projection-mapped that content across all of the visual end points that Defacto Entertainment had installed."

Rivero adds that MEPTIK, in partnership with Defacto Entertainment, worked with DIRECTV's creative services team to ensure that all audio-visual elements aligned with DIRECTV's brand specifications.

"We took care to translate the brand into a cohesive live event experience that visually supported the mood, energy, and aesthetic of the event as one cohesive experience," said Rivero. "Notch and disguise were instrumental in enabling us to deliver such a dynamic, intensive audio-reactive, and environmental experience that truly matched the vibe and energy of each area. Every interactive element was responsive based on the activity at that moment."
