2013 Outstanding Historic Theatre Award Honors New York City Center Renovation Led by Duncan Hazard / EnneadIn celebration of excellence in the preservation, restoration, and sustainable operation of historic theaters throughout North America, New York City Center was recently presented with the 2013 Outstanding Historic Theatre Award by The League of Historic American Theatres (LHAT). LHAT is a non-profit association dedicated to sustaining America's historic theatres for the benefit of their communities and future generations. City Center has been recognized as a national model for historic theatre restoration and renovation, for the quality of its programs and services, and for providing cultural leadership within its community -- both on stage and off. "The Awards Committee had several excellent nominations to consider this year, but in the end it was a unanimous decision to select New York City Center," stated the 2013 Outstanding Theatre Awards jury. "The selection committee felt that City Center had demonstrated best practices in historic theatre restoration during its most recent renovation. The incredible beauty of the space speaks for itself and the League of Historic American Theatres recognizes New York City Center as an exemplary model for other historic theatres to study." The complete renovation has preserved the essential character of the landmark building and reinvigorated the identity of one of the city's most venerable performing arts venues. This award acknowledges the success of the design team led by partner-in-charge Duncan Hazard, whose goal was to create a vibrant new venue with all of the conveniences and amenities that contemporary patrons expect, but one that is still "City Center," beloved by generations of New York City theatergoers. This recent award from LHAT is an addition to the list honoring the City Center renovation, which includes recognition from AIA New York State, AIA New York Chapter, Chicago Athenaeum, USITT, SARA NY, New York Landmarks Conservancy, and the Municipal Arts Society which awarded City Center the 2012 MASterworks Award for Best Restoration.
