The Olivier Awards, which award achievement in London's professional theatre, were awarded last night.

In the design categories, Paule Constable (well-known in the US for her work on Broadway and the Metropolitan Opera) won for The Ocean at the End of the Lane, based on the novel by Neil Gaiman, which was seen at the National Theatre and is scheduled for a West End transfer whenever the pandemic ends. Sound designer Emma Laxton and costume designer Joanna Scotcher were cited for Emilia, a play by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm that attempts to identify Shakespeare Dark Lady of the Sonnets. It was produced originally by the Lyric Hammersmith and later in the West End. Interestingly, scenic designer Bob Crowley won for a West End revival of the musical Mary Poppins, which he designed for its 2004 premiere and on Broadway on 2006.

The leading productions at the awards were the Broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen (which took Best Musical); & Juliet, a jukebox musical about Shakespeare's heroine, and Emilia, each winning three awards apiece. Tom Stoppard's Leopoldstadt took the award for Best New Play.
