Sensaphonics Widens its Golden Circle of Audiologists

Sensaphonics Golden Circle seminar participants with engineer Spenser Morris; Sensaphonics Joe Tessone and Michael Santucci; participants Adam W. Rohe, Kay Kochman, Sharon A. Sandridge; and Sensaphonics audiology intern Heather Malyuk.

Sensaphonics, a manufacturer of personal monitoring, has completed its final Golden Circle training seminar of 2012, adding three audiologists to its referral network. The two-day Golden Circle seminar teaches the specific skills required to serve music industry clientele with need-specific hearing protection and in-ear monitoring solutions.

Sharon A. Sandridge of the famed Cleveland Clinic, in Ohio, was joined by two audiologists from Arizona's Tri-City Audiology, Allen W. Rohe, AuD, of Tempe, and Kay Kochman, AuD, of Chandler, in earning Golden Circle certification. The seminar took place September 14-15, with instruction held at Sensaphonics headquarters and practical training with a live band held at Mystery Street Recording Company, both in Chicago, Illinois.

The Golden Circle seminar is taught by Dr. Michael Santucci, Sensaphonics president and founder, along with the company's audio engineering consultant, Joe Tessone. Participants are taught the basics of concert sound systems, with specific emphasis on in-ear monitoring. Other topics include the audiologist's role in musicians' hearing health, backstage etiquette, and in-ear products and technology. Innovations like the company's patented 3D Active Ambient IEM system and dB Check in-ear sound level analyzer are presented in detail.

"Musicians are very different from the typical audiology client," notes Santucci. "It's important that audiologists elevate themselves beyond simply taking ear impressions and offer musicians some much-needed expertise in how to use in-ear monitors safely, while respecting their needs as artists. It's not something they teach in audiology school."

As always, the highlight of the seminar for the audiologists is the hands-on lab session working with a live band, this time a three-piece indie rock band named Fletcher. The session took place at Tessone's Mystery Street studio/rehearsal facility, allowing the audiologists to get familiar with the sound system, interact with the musicians, take sound level measurements, and experience in-ear monitoring for themselves.

"There's a lot more to in-ear monitors than taking ear impressions, and I take personal pride in helping teach fellow audiologists how to better serve the music industry," says Santucci. "Artists and engineers can be confident they are getting professional service and advice that is geared to their needs when they choose a Golden Circle audiologist."
