Outer Critics Circle Announces 2012 - 2013 AwardsOuter Critics Circle, the organization of writers and commentators for media covering New York theatre, announced today its award winners for the latest season in 24 categories. The revival of Pippin, directed by Diane Paulus, earned seven awards, including Outstanding Revival of a Musical, the most of any production of the season. Other productions that were multiple award winners include Kinky Boots, which won three awards, and Matilda The Musical, My Name Is Asher Lev, The Nance, and Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, which won two awards apiece. Kenneth Posner won the Outstanding Lighting Design award for his work on Pippin. He was competing against Ken Billington for Chaplin: The Musical, Paul Gallo for Dogfight, Donald Holder for Golden Boy, and his own work on Cinderella. Rob Howell won the Outstanding Set Design award for his work on Matilda the Musical against John Lee Beatty for The Nance, David Korins for Here Lies Love, Scott Pask for Pippin, and Michael Yeargan for Golden Boy. The Outstanding Costume Design Award went to William Ivey Long for Cinderella, who won against Amy Clark and Martin Pakledinaz for Chaplin: The Musical, Gregg Barnes for Kinky Boots, Dominique Lemieux for Pippin, and his own work for The Mystery of Edwin Drood. A Special Achievement Award went to the Irish Repertory Theatre's Charlotte Moore, artistic director, and CiarĂ¡n O'Reilly, producing director, in recognition of 25 years of producing outstanding theatre. Broadway stars Judy Kaye, Audra McDonald, and Tonya Pinkins among others will serve as gala award presenters at the upcoming 63rd Annual Outer Critics Circle Awards ceremony at 4pm May 23 at the legendary Sardis Restaurant.
