Montreal's Percival Molson Memorial Stadium Upgrades Audio System with JBL VERTEC Line Arrays

Percival Molson Memorial Stadium is a 25,000-seat outdoor football stadium in Montreal, Canada. Owned by McGill University, Moli6 is home to the McGill Redmen of the Quebec University Football League and the Montreal Alouettes, of the Canadian Football League. The stadium opened in 1919, and has seen a number of upgrades over the years, most recently with a new audio system featuring Harman JBL VERTEC line arrays and AE Series loudspeakers. Solotech, a systems integrator with eight locations in Canada, the U.S., and China, handled the design and installation.

One side of Molson Stadium contains an overhanging roof, from which Solotech mounted a variety of JBL AE Series loudspeakers, including 16 AM4212/95-WRX weatherized speakers, eight AC2212/95 compact speakers, an AM4200/64-WRX weatherized speaker, seven AL6125-WRX weatherized subwoofers, and four ASB6118 subwoofers. Eight Control 29AV surface-mount speakers provide additional fill. Further reinforcement is provided via six portable rigs that each contain four VERTEC VT4887A compact line array elements and two VT4881A arrayable subwoofers. Crown MA5000i and MA9000i amplifiers power the system, with Crown XTi4000 amplifiers powering the AC2212/95 and Control 29AV speakers. Processing is handled via BSS Soundweb.

"A main goal of the new audio system was that it had to provide full coverage of all the seating in the stadium at 105dB SPL," notes Dominic Galien, senior representative, integration of Solotech. "As we know, football fans can get extremely enthusiastic -- and noisy -- and we needed a system that would be clear and intelligible even at louder levels and be heard over the noise of the crowd when necessary.

"To help accomplish this, we needed loudspeakers that were very efficient," continues Galien. "With JBL, I had a variety of loudspeakers to choose from that had the high sensitivity required, and would deliver high output and even coverage over a wide listening area."

"The system has performed extremely well," concludes Galien, "in fact, it has been delivering beyond our expectations. In addition, Soundcraft Canada, the pro audio distributor we worked with, provided excellent support throughout the project."
