Richard Pilbrow Joins Faculty of Stage Lighting Super Saturday

Richard Pilbrow

Richard Pilbrow will join Stage Lighting Super Saturday this January 14th to speak about his work on My Fair Lady's 60th anniversary production. Pilbrow tells Super Saturday "Let's call my session 'My Fair Lady -- Revisiting Stage Lighting History.' I researched the Abe Feder MFL, because I lit the 60th anniversary re-creation of the original production: Oliver Smith, Cecil Beaton, Abe Feder -- directed by Julie Andrews at the Sydney Opera House in August 2016!!"

Workshop producer Scott Parker says "What an exciting opportunity to hear about the process of re-creating the original production. I am thrilled that Richard is joining us this year."

Pilbrow is an internationally known lighting designer with a breathtaking career. His designs include A Tale of Two Cities, Our Town, The Life, Show Boat, Broadway; The Sleeping Beauty American Ballet Theatre, Metropolitan Opera; The Magic Flute LA Opera; many UK National Theatre Company and West End productions. Pilbrow is the founder and chairman emeritus of Theatre Projects Consultants for 1,200 projects in 70 countries. Author of Stage Lighting an international teaching text and Stage Lighting Design published in 1997. In 2010 Live Design voted Pilbrow "one of the 50 most powerful people in the entertainment technology industry." 2015 marks publication of the second edition of his autobiographical A Theatre Project, described by drama critic Michael Coveney as "Superbly illustrated . . . A history of theatre from an entirely new and fresh perspective." Hot off the presses, copies of A Theatre Project -- Second Edition will be available at both Stage Lighting Super Saturday January 14th and Stage Sound Super Sunday, January 15th. (Also available from PLASA Media, nyc@plasa.org, and as an eBook for both Web and iOS.)

The 12th Annual Stage Lighting Super Saturday workshop, continuing its practical and hands-on educational presentations, will take place on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at the New York University Tisch School of the Arts located at 721 Broadway in New York City. Super Saturday is produced by Parker with the help of the NYU Tisch School.

The event, as in years past, is specifically designed to enhance, answer, and benefit the interests and abilities of all involved in the application of innovative stage, architectural, and entertainment lighting.

To accomplish that goal, the intensive all day Stage Lighting Super Saturday Seminars are led by active members of the theatrical lighting community for the benefit of new, aspiring, and advancing stage and event designers. Particular emphasis addresses training, inspiration, and effective techniques. Additionally, the nuts and bolts implementation of the many new and long established products that aid in the achieving the desired results are detailed; presented are the methods and equipment that can get the job done as originally visualized.

Intensive subjects include Stage Lighting 101 for those new to the art; the use of conventional long established luminaires; the latest LED, and traditional Incandescent and Arc Source instruments; the implementation of color, special effects, mood and scene lighting; and choosing among the myriad of helpful mechanical implements such as consoles, moving lights, computers, and many others.

Approximately 20 technical specialists, as well as manufacturers of superior equipment, will demonstrate techniques and newly available cost-effective products. Among the present and past manufacturing contributors, all noted for their lighting expertise and practical implementation, are such stalwarts as A.C.T Lighting, Altman Lighting, Apollo, Chauvet Professional, City Theatrical, ETC, ENTTEC, Field Template, Lee, Lighting&Sound America, Lite-Trol, Lycian, Motorized Rigging, Philips (Strand, Selecon, Vari-Lite), Robert Juliat, RC4, Sapsis Rigging, and TMB.
