Available Light Wins IALD Award of MeritAvailable Light recently won a 2015 IALD Award of Merit for the National Archives Rotunda in Washington, DC. Presented May 6, 2015, during the International Lighting Design Awards, produced by International Association of Lighting Designers in New York City, the awards honor lighting design achievements of firms across the globe over the past year. For more information on the awards, visit the IALD site listed below. The Rotunda is home to the original Charter Documents including the Declaration of Independence, US Constitution, and Bill of Rights. These extremely delicate and cherished documents required special lighting considerations, and thus custom LED luminaires were designed with the manufacturer Prolume to fulfill specific aiming, color temperature, and CRI requirements. "Our goals were to enhance the architectural environment, improve color rendering, and spare the precious artifacts from harmful UV emissions. We also wanted to reduce the maintenance load, and provide dimming so that lighting could be fine-tuned over time for an ever-evolving exhibition space," said Steven Rosen, IALD, principal and creative director of Available Light. The custom-designed luminaires are energy efficient and easily replaced, reducing maintenance resources and reducing energy usage over the previous lighting system by as much as 84%. The new all-LED lighting scheme provides several layers of light, including indirect lighting to reveal the deeply coffered rotunda dome and a series of Lumenpulse narrow beam spotlights that gently accentuate the 1934 Faulkner.
