D.A.S. Audio Deployed At Las Vegas' Tropicana Hotel Located at the southern end of the Las Vegas Strip, the Tropicana Hotel has a storied history that dates back to 1957. Over the years, the "Trop," as it's known, has been spotted in films such as Elvis Presley's Viva Las Vegas and the James Bond 007 hit Diamonds Are Forever. The hotel's Tiffany Theatre -- once home to the Folies Bergère production show -- now serves as a venue for a wide variety of headline shows and other entertainment. An upgraded loudspeaker system consisting of products from the Aero and Avant Series catalogs of D.A.S. Audio was recently placed into service. Las Vegas-based A.D.D. Productions, a part of Eagle Group Holdings, manages all aspects of entertainment at the Tiffany Theatre as well as the hotel's forthcoming Las Vegas Mob Experience attraction. A.D.D. Productions' general manager, David DeLeo, who oversees all aspects of the company's operations, selected a sizeable D.A.S. Audio loudspeaker system consisting of an Aero Series 2 line array setup for the house mains -- accompanied by Avant Series loudspeakers for monitors. "Upon examining the room," DeLeo explained, "we discovered that it was not symmetrical and, hence, had numerous issues in terms of consistent coverage. As a result, we wanted a sound system that would facilitate changes easily and a line array system was a great choice because -- depending upon how you had the individual modules within a cluster pinned -- coverage could be very finely tuned. The D.A.S. Aero line array was the perfect solution since the integrated hardware is so adaptable. This feature enabled us to carefully adjust the angles of the individual enclosures to ensure even dispersion throughout." The Tiffany Theatre's new D.A.S. loudspeaker setup consists of fourteen Aero-12A powered, two-way, mid-high line array modules-placed seven elements per side. Four D.A.S. Audio Aero-8A ultra-compact, two-way powered loudspeaker elements are evenly distributed across the front edge of the stage and serve as front fill for the seating area immediately adjacent to the front of the stage. Low-frequency support is supplied by a combination of four D.A.S. Audio LX-218A and two LX-215A high performance subwoofers. Twin LX-218A enclosures (stacked atop one another) are positioned at floor level on each side of the stage and are vertically aligned with the overhead Aero-12A loudspeaker clusters. The dual LX-215A subwoofers are positioned in the center area of the stage at floor level. D.A.S. Audio's Avant Series loudspeakers handle a variety of monitoring functions. Depending upon the requirements of any given act, eight Avant-12A powered, multipurpose loudspeakers are available to serve as floor wedges. The drum monitor setup consists of a D.A.S. Avant-15A full-range loudspeaker used in tandem with an Avant-118A subwoofer. An additional two Avant-15A enclosures serve as sidefills. "D.A.S. Audio's contribution was invaluable," notes DeLeo. "Carlos Henao, D.A.S. Audio's U.S. accounts manager, worked closely with us. Carlos assisted every step of the way and was a tremendous help. He modeled the room with EASE Focus and made several recommendations on how to best install the system. Installation took place in mid October and the system was used almost immediately afterwards on October 31." In addition to headline acts such as Charlie Daniels and Jon Secada, the Tiffany Theatre is currently home to the extreme martial arts show Sideswipe, the Yesterday, The Beatles Tribute, and Recycled Percussion, which uses a wide variety of unusual objects as instruments. In addition to the upgraded sound system, the Tiffany Theatre is expected to receive a substantial refurbishment in 2011.
