Life of Pi Takes Design Honors at Olivier Awards

The stage version of Yann Martel's novel Life of Pit took two design awards at the Olivier Awards, which honor achievement in London's professional theatre. Tim Hatley (scenery) and Nick Barnes and Finn Caldwell (puppets) won in the scenic design category, with Tim Lutkin and Andzrej Goulding cited for lighting design. Life of Pi also won the award for best new play, as did Hiran Abeysekera (best actor) and, in the supporting actor category, the seven actors who play the tiger who is so central to the play.

Other design winners included the American costume designer Catherine Zuber for the musical Moulin Rouge! and sound designer Nick Lidster for Cabaret. The latter production took seven awards including those for actors Eddie Redmayne and Jessie Buckley. The award for best new musical went to Back to the Future.
