TSC Upgrades Audio System for City of Brea Theatre with Yamaha and NEXO

Brea Civic and Cultural Center in Brea, California

The 199-seat Curtis Theatre, located in the Brea Civic and Cultural Center in Brea, California, has upgraded its audio system to include a Yamaha Commercial Installations Solutions (CIS) system, QL5 Digital Audio Console with a Rio3224-D input/output stage box, NEXO speakers, and DTD-1 controller. The CIS products installed include three of the new PGM1 paging station microphones, MTX-5 system processor, and Provisionaire software.

Trinity Sound Company (TSC) of Anaheim Hills, California designed and installed the new audio system. TSC is a full service audio production company offering live sound, remote recording, system design, sales, and integration.

The Curtis Theatre is used for theatrical productions, dance recitals, concerts, corporate meetings, and special events. Its expansive stage and seating area puts performers a mere 35' from the audience.

"What was unique about the Curtis Theatre project is that we also incorporated the Yamaha MTX processor to handle lobby, dressing room, backstage, offices monitoring, and communications," states Devin DeVore, president of TSC. "The Yamaha system is managing all of the audio throughout the theatre with an iPad Mini running Provisionaire software that TSC designed with custom controls."

Another key component to this project was the NEXO PS Speakers Series. "The PS15 with its Asymmetrical Dispersion Constant Directivity horn really allowed us the ability to focus the sound where we needed and to keep it away from reflective surfaces and other structural features in the theatre," says DeVore. "It really helps to have the tools NEXO provides like the 3D modeling with the NS-1 software. This software has been instrumental for all of our NEXO designs as well as our live events. We always get solid, predictable systems without any question in design and deployment of physical systems. Few systems still give me that excited anticipation when reaching to power up; it's always a treat to hear some NEXO speakers."

"Designing a system for our space came with some unique challenges including a steep rake in the house and the close proximity of the audience to the stage," said Kristofer Kataoka, manager of the Curtis Theatre. "With TSC's expert selection, installation, and tuning of the NEXO and Yamaha gear, our room has never had better coverage, clarity, or dynamic range. The PA also blends seamlessly with the new Yamaha CIS paging and monitoring system TSC designed and integrated."

Kataoka added that the monitoring/paging system automatically blends between a board feed from the QL5 and hanging mics over the stage. "We can also direct specific feeds into the paging system using the matrix outs. They work together, but they are still two independent systems. Pretty cool."
