In Memoriam: Timothy Brennan

Tim Brennan

Lighting&Sound America has learned of the death, on December 27, of Tim Brennan, a well-known lighting industry figure who, most recently, was a longtime executive at PRG. He was 56.

Brennan was born in Hackensack, New Jersey on October 25, 1965, to June (McCormick) and Jim Brennan of New York and Chicago, respectively. The Brennan family moved to Las Vegas in 1968 when Jim Brennan opened the lighting house Cinema Services. Brennan attended St. Peter's Catholic School in Henderson before transferring to Las Vegas Day School. During this time, his mother was Miss June on the syndicated children's TV show Romper Room. As the show aired live, he often functioned as male understudy, sometimes up appearing on the show at a moment's notice. He was also a member of the LVDS basketball team.

From 1979 through 1983, Brennan attended Bishop Gorman High School, where he was a member of the international educational exchange organization Youth for Understanding, himself attending school in Melbourne, Australia in the 1980 - 81 school year. During this time, he would travel to visit his brother, Seamus, who was dancing at a casino production in Tasmania. While at Mazenod College in Melbourne, he taught his teammates the "run-and-gun" style of the UNLV Rebels, which resulted in Mazenod winning its basketball championship that year.

Returning home, Brennan began learning about entertainment production from his father. He spent a year at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, California, another year at Dominican University of California in San Rafael, and attended University College in Oxford, England where he received a certificate in international studies. Ultimately, he decided on the University of San Francisco, which he attended from 1985 through 1989, graduating with a double major in government and philosophy. While in San Francisco, he worked as an intern for the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and fostered his lifelong passion for The Grateful Dead.

After graduation, he spent a year in New York studying acting, then returned to Las Vegas. He officially joined Cinema Services in January 1991, starting as counter sales manager, and ending up as director of sales. He left Cinema Services in October 1995, following the death of his father two months earlier.

Brennan worked with Mark Rowlands at Towards 2000 in Burbank, becoming general manager for the Las Vegas area in June 1996. In March 1998, he went to Matthews Studio Group, again as general manager in Las Vegas. In May 2000, he was hired by Martin Professional, working as national rental sales manager and general manager of the Las Vegas office.

In 2006, Brennan joined PRG, serving as vice-president and remaining there until his death. He was involved in all aspects of entertainment lighting and audio-visual production, including sales and rental. There is not a property on the Las Vegas Strip to which he did not contribute to in some capacity.

Brennan married Paige Woodward in May 2004. They had two children, Kennedy and Blakley. Brennan was a member of the Knights of Columbus, first degree and was involved in the Boy Scouts of America. From September 2011 through June 2016, he was Cubmaster of Pack 99, chartered with Our Lady of Las Vegas School in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Brennan was a fiercely dedicated salesman with many friends throughout the industry. In a statement, his family said, "Tim was incredibly devoted to his family. He and his son, Kennedy (15), totally bonded over Tim's love of baseball, grooming Kennedy into the top-notch player for Bishop Gorman High School he is today. Tim and his daughter, Blakley (11), shared a love of trivia and intellectual sparring on a level that went well beyond her years.

"Tim had a deep-seated sensibility for people. He had the innate ability to look through to the real person, start a conversation, and connect on a deeper level. He also had the capacity to think out of the box. The ability to explore ideas that are creative and unusual and not limited by rules and tradition. These facets of his personality served him well in his private and professional life.

"Tim had a big heart. His appreciation for a good laugh, a good story, and a good song made him a person that you always wanted to be around. He will be missed."

Brennan is survived by his wife, children and his siblings Barbara, William, and Monica.

Funeral services will be at Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic Church on Wednesday, January 12 at 1pm with a celebration of life immediately after at the Crown and Anchor Pub.

A recording of his funeral Mass can be accessed at: youtu.be/zUmObgm_dDk.
