Tony Award Winners Announced

In a season without sweeps or (in some cases) front runners, this year's Tony Awards spread the wealth. David Adjmi's music industry drama Stereophonic, the one sure thing, took the best-play award, although it fell far short of its 13 nominations. The award for best musical went to The Outsiders, based on S. E. Hinton's classic novel; a popular success, it was cautiously favored by many predictors with the proviso that it could be knocked out by Alicia Keys' Hell's Kitchen (the biggest hit among the best musical nominees) or Shaina Taub's Suffs, which, ironically, took the awards for best book and score.

The design categories were, similarly, all over the place. The scenic design awards went to David Zinn, for Stereophonic's atmospheric recording studio, and Tom Scutt, for his top-to-bottom renovation of the August Wilson Theatre into a seedy Berlin night spot in Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club. Lighting design awards went to Jane Cox, for her eerie work in the dysfunctional family drama Appropriate, and Brian MacDevitt and projection designer Hana S. Kim, for the punchy, effects-laden look of The Outsiders. Sound design awards went to Cody Spencer, for his potent combination of amplification and effects in The Outsiders, and Ryan Rumery, for his accurate recreation of recording studio sound in Stereophonic. Awarded in the costume design category were Dede Ayite, for the distinctive, colorful looks seen in Jaja's African Hair Braiding, and Linda Cho, for the Roaring Twenties styles of The Great Gatsby.

Multiple award winners included Stereophonic with five, The Outsiders and a revival of the Stephen Sondheim musical Merrily We Roll Along with four apiece, and Appropriate with three.
