Carnegie Mellon School of Drama Student Wins Sound ScholarshipCarnegie Mellon University School of Drama student, Maggie Burke, received the 2013 John and Helen Meyer Sound Scholarship. Burke, a Seattle, Washington native and 2011 graduate of Roosevelt High School, is a rising junior majoring in sound design. She was one of six recipients of the scholarship that is awarded to undergraduate students, graduate students, and recent graduates, who show the most dedication and interest in their field through their application materials. The scholarship pays for tuition to attend the Broadway Sound Master Classes in New York City. Burke became interested in theatrical sound design in high school. She decided to attend CMU because it was one of the only universities with a program that suited her interests. "The classes and production experiences that I have had at CMU have shown me how much there is to learn about this field and the plethora of career opportunities available," Burke said. Throughout her time at CMU, Burke has proved to be an outstanding student. "Maggie is a very gifted student: talented, smart, inquisitive, dedicated, and proactive in her education," said Joe Pino, associate professor of sound design. "These are the same qualities that will make her a great sound designer." Not only has she excelled in the classroom, but outside of the classroom, as well. Burke is currently interning for a sound shop in New York City. She plans on applying to CMU's Fifth Year Scholars Program, which would enable her to complete a minor in engineering. "After spending three more years at CMU, I plan to move to New York and pursue a career as a Broadway mixer and sound designer."
