SGM Light Powers Epstein Family Amphitheater

SGM's IP66-rated fixtures were chosen to withstand the amphitheater's coastal location, ensuring durability against the Pacific Ocean's harsh elements, the company says.

Completed in 2023, the Epstein Family Amphitheater at UC San Diego is a state-of-the-art venue that caters to a wide range of performances, from student tours to multi-act music festivals. Central to its architectural vision, the amphitheater'ss shell was designed to blend seamlessly into its park-like setting, free from visual clutter caused by trusses, motors, and lighting equipment. The project's architect is Safdie Rabines with Apeiro Design serving as venue. The integrator is LVH Entertainment.

To achieve this clean aesthetic, venue consultants specified SGM Light for the lighting solutions. The lighting had to be low maintenance, integrated into the architecture, and capable of adapting to various lighting needs. SGM provided three types of fixtures: a powerful variable- white wash light that could color-tune to match sunlight at different times of the day, vibrant color-changing wash fixtures for simple events, and cutting-edge moving lights for dynamic performances, the company says. The units include 42 P-6 POIs, 10 i-5 POIs, 33 G-Spot Turbo POIs, and nine G-Spot Turbo Std.

"The SGM fixtures have a design that separates them from other fixtures. We were sent several fixtures to demo while we made our choices, and we could tell the SGM units were different as soon as they unpacked. They felt more solid, more robust, and had a nicer look than many other fixtures," notes Howard Glickman, project manager at Apeiro Design.

SGM's IP66-rated fixtures were chosen to withstand the amphitheater's coastal location, ensuring durability against the Pacific Ocean's harsh elements, including fog, rain, and salty air. Glickman expressed confidence in the long-term reliability of the SGM products, highlighting the company's support and collaboration throughout the project.
